A total of seven state troopers were struck by other cars last year when standing outside of their vehicles. A police spokesman said that drunk and impaired drivers may be drawn to the brighter lights, causing an accident. The investigation is currently looking at several different police vehicles and their lights and flash patterns, but that the study will take months to complete.

According to officiasl with the Massachusetts State Police, saturation patrols – extra patrols flooding a specific geographic area – are deployed on many nights throughout the year. The extra deployments will supplement regular patrols that State Police roll around the clock on three daily shifts.

“Any single fatality on our roads is one too many, but the fact that we responded to several fatalities this weekend is profoundly sad,” said Colonel Marian J. McGovern, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police. “Our thougths are with the families who lost loved ones, and our determination to interdict impaired, aggressive, and reckless drivers is unwavering.”

State Police will roll approximately 15 additional patrols in the greater Worcester area on the night of Thursday, Dec. 16.

According to officials with the Massachusetts State Patrol, the accident occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Route 24. The driver, identified as 20 year-old Jorell Jones, of Brockton, was not injured in the crash.

Jones was driving a 2000 Ford Mustang when he lost control of the vehicle and it rolled near the Route 27 exit. Avon Fire Department crews worked to clear the scene while state troopers investigated the accident. Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Michael Popovics said the scene was clear by 2:30 p.m.

According to officials with the Portsmouth Police Department, 42 year-old Sean Harris crashed into a fence around the Portsmouth High School football field shortly after 1:00 p.m. Monday. Sgt. Roni Russo said the Harris had been “driving erratically” through the high school parking lots before the crash.

“He was obviously looking for a way out,” Russo said. “He did finally find his way out and we responded there after he had already left.”

Police said Harris crashed through two gates and his vehicle ended up on the football field. Harris was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital as a precaution, and was released after being cleared by doctors.
